This web site is dedicated to the men and women who served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America during one of the most troubled times in our history. From 1959 to1975 our country was never so divided since the great Civil War. The focus of the Western Slope Vietnam War Memorial is to honor those who served, in and out of country and especially those who were killed, disabled, and missing or taken prisoner. The basic design of the memorial will be a static display of a UH-1H helicopter. The Huey is the symbol of the Vietnam Era. The Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps all flew missions in the Huey aircraft. All US military branches will have their emblem placed on the Wall of the Memorial. The names of the men from the Western Slope who were lost will have a special representation incorporated into the memorial. On the pad of the memorial will be the United States flag, Colorado State flag, and the Vietnam Service Ribbon. The secured site for the memorial is the Fruita Welcome Center in Mesa County. Interstate 70 runs through the heart of Fruita and we believe this will give the memorial a national audience. Not only is the location ideal but Fruita experienced the loss of several sons during the war. The City of Fruita will take on the maintenance and liability for the memorial.
It is our sincere belief that with your support and commitment we will build a lasting tribute to the Western Slope and Colorado Vietnam Era Veterans. Let your voice be heard by calling or writing your elected officials. Please help us also by giving us a few dollars or a few hours of your time. Please help us make this project a reality "Lest we forget"!
The inspiration for the memorial was a story of two 1967 Central High Graduates. They were best of friends who learned how to fly at Walker Field at the age of 16 years old. They were sent to Vietnam 1970. Tommy Doody as a pilot of a UH-1H chopper and Marshall Davis in the Corps of Engineers. Tommy is killed on a mission into Laos in 1971. Marshall dies piloting an Ambulance Helicopter in 1986 in Oregon. It is their story that evolved this project into The Western Slope Vietnam War Memorial. We have provided links in order for you to enjoy their personal stories.
Thank You!!!
